Born in Ontario, Tom grew up with four siblings. His family moved to Ghana when Tom was six, where his father educated teachers. Tom moved back to Canada with his family for high school, and later went to Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, playing on the basketball team and graduated with degrees in English, Biology, and Education.
In college, Tom began acting in the play Grease and soon discovered his love for acting. In 1991, Ed had his first minor role in the movie White Light. Tom held many minor roles in television series and movies until 1999 when he appeared in eight episodes of Providence. Soon after, Tom was cast as the series lead in Ed which ran for 83 episodes. He has also appeared in recurring roles in the series Love Monkey and Eli Stone, as well as the films Alchemy, Trust Me, and 9/11 Kevin.
