Shirley is a nurse at Sacred Heart, but nobody notices her resemblance to an old nurse, except J.D. who gave her the nickname "Lavernagain". (My Identity Crisis)

- Bill Lawrence created the character of Shirley because he promised Aloma Wright a role, as the killing off of Laverne was written under the impression that it was the final year of the show.
- Initially it was reported that Shirley would be Laverne's twin sister, an alcoholic, non-religious "anti-Laverne", but this has since turned out to be untrue, although she does have the same last name "Roberts."[1]
