Scrubs Wiki:Editing

From Scrubs Wiki

Due to recent Wikia upgrades, this article on editing may seem a little out of date. For fresher help, visit Wikia's central Help page.

Editing wikis is very simple to do, and very easy to learn. Most editing is similar to editing a document in a word processor. Below you'll find the basic editing tricks to make the page look the way you want it to, and more advanced elements that can make a page look perfect.

Big text Scrubs Scrubs and around the desired text

[edit] Linking

See the above table for how to link to other articles on Scrubs Wiki, or external links. Our policy on outgoing links is that we allow them on our pages, given they are actually related to the subject of the article.

  • Red Links vs. Blue Links: The difference between red links and blue links is that blue links link to articles that exist, while red links link to wanted articles.
  • Linking to images or categories is very simple. Simply use a colon ( : ) before the file or category name, for example Image:SarahChalke.jpg or Category:Doctors. Also, piping is possible, just like other links.

[edit] Headings

There are several headings which are usable on Scrubs Wiki.

[edit] Heading One

==Heading One== Use two equal signs ( = ) on both sides of text.

[edit] Heading Two

===Heading Two=== Use three equal signs ( = ) on both sides of text.

[edit] Heading Three

====Heading Three==== Use four equal signs ( = ) on both sides of text.

[edit] Templates

Templates are wonderfully easy ways to insert formatting that is frequently used. For example, the character box on the J.D. article is made by plugging "Zach Braff" "Doctor", "My First Day" and the image name in.

View all of our templates here, or request a template here.

[edit] Categories

Every page should have a category, be it Category:Cast or Category:Images from My First Day. Scroll to the bottom of this page to see its category, which is "Scrubs Wiki". To insert a category, type . To see all current categories, click here. While categories can be added anywhere on a page, try to keep them on the bottom so they can easily be found to be edited, changed, or remove.

  • Note: Some templates automatically add categories to pages.

[edit] Arranging articles in Categories

All articles in a category will be automatically alphabetized by article name. However, on some categories, especially those categorizing people, we would like to arrange them in other ways. This is done by piping the category on the articles page. For example, we would want Perry Cox to show up as Cox, Perry on the category page. This is done by adding to the bottom of his article.

[edit] Other Info

  • Like all wikis, you can edit any non-protected page. Your changes will be visible immediately. Just click the "edit" link that appears at the top of every page.
Please abide to the follwing guidelines, and everything will work smoothly.

[edit] Summaries

Explain your edit in the summary box between the edit window and the save and preview buttons. ex.: "typo" or "added info on topic".

[edit] Show Preview

Use the show preview button to check your edit and get the formatting right before saving. Remember to save your preview before moving on.

[edit] Minor Edits vs. Major Edits

If you are logged in, you can mark an edit as minor by checking the This is a minor edit box to let people know your edit is not something substantive. An edit is minor when it is generally less than 20 words, or if you are just rearranging a page. If you are replacing an entire section with new text, it is generally considered a major change.

[edit] Signing Talk Pages

You can sign talk pages by inserting four tildes in a row ( ~~~~ ), or by pushing the signature button. Do so on talk pages, to show who has what opinions. Do not sign articles, as they are all collaborations.

[edit] Sandbox

To try editing, open a new window and go to the Wikia:Sandbox (which is an editing test area), and then click the "edit" link. Add something and click save.

[edit] Images

What you Want What to Type What it will Look Like Extra Info
Non bordered, non resized image Image:SarahChalke.jpg This is usually not used,
for images are usually large and
take up a lot of space on the page.
Non bordered, resized image Any number can be used, rather than "100".
Bordered image, without resizing, without text.
Again, not usually used because of the size. It is not possible to force a size on "|frame"
Bordered image, with or without resizing,
with text (without text leaves a gap)
This form is used the majority of the time,
because of the ability to force a size,
have a border, and have an editable caption.

[edit] Image Alignment

All of the above types of images can either be left aligned, or right aligned. Simply add " |right " or " |left " to the end of the image formula. Keep in mind that aligning the images left or right can cause some rearranging of existing text. Also note that without alignment, the images can just float anywhere, and look unkempt.
