Richard has worked as unit production manager for 67 episodes of Scrubs and several episodes of The Larry Sanders Show. He has also worked as production manager for 19 episodes, first assistant director for 66 episodes, and has directed three episodes of Scrubs. He has also worked on the shows Ellen and The Love Boat. In 1986 he won a DGA award for his work on The Color Purple.
