Born in Kansas, R. Lee Ermey has earned a reputation for playing militaristic roles on TV and in the movies. This might be because he was in the US Marine Corps for 11 years rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant after serving in Vietnam and Okinawa, Japan. After injuries forced him to retire, he soon landed a role in the film Apocalypse Now, where he also served as a technical adviser. A few years and a few roles later, R. Lee appeared in his most famous role in Full Metal Jacket which won him a Golden Globe. He can be seen other military dramas and action films such as Mississippi Burning, Purple Heart, and The Sender. Recently, R. Lee has appeared in many comedies and family programs such as Toy Story, Man of the House and Saving Silverman. On TV, R. Lee has appeared in many episodes of the series Cracker and Action. He has lent his voice to many cartoons such as The Angry Beavers, Invader Zim, and Recess. R. Lee appeared in the show House M.D. as House's father. He is also the only service member in history to be promoted after retirement to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant.
