Mr. Winston was a patient at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Because meningoccocus is contagious, any staff that entered Mr. Winston's room had to wear protective masks. When J.D. first met him as his patient, he wasn't afraid to enter the room and talk to him about Judy Bloom books. Later, when J.D. got more concerned about his possible Hepatitis infection, he didn't want to enter Mr. Winston's room and had Carla do his work for him. When Carla called him out, he traded Mr. Winston to Dr. Cox, who refused to give him back when J.D. got over his fear. In the end, although he wasn't his official doctor, J.D. still went and hung out with Mr. Winston so he wouldn't be too bored.
