Born in Lexington, Mississippi, Hattie has appeared in many theatrical productions, and has been a leading member in the African American drama community. Hattie has been acting since the early 1970s. She can be seen in 520 episodes of The Electric Company, 25 episodes of Nurse, 42 episodes of Homefront, and 129 episodes of Becker. Hattie can also be seen in the films The Battle of Shaker Heights, True Crime, and Beverly Hills Cop III, among others.
