Synopsis[]

Turk[]

3x18 Turk Grace Cox

Grace chews out Turk in front of Dr. Cox

Dr. Cox picks J.D. to help him in research but he quickly regrets his choice and replaces him with Lonnie. Since J.D. already has his shifts covered he has nothing to do and the narration switches to Turk. Turk is about to mail the invitations to his wedding but doesn't after J.D. says "after Turk turns those suckers in, there's no turning back".

Turk has to operate on a highschooler named Brian but introduces himself childishly, much to the displeasure of his attending Dr. Grace Miller. Turk and Brian bond and Turk learns that his patient will be attending Juliard on a piano scholarship. During the surgery Turk accidentally lacerates the brachial artery which results in nerve damage in Brian's hand. He initially lies to Brian because he assumes it wouldn't change Brian's future, but after some earnest conversations with Carla he comes clean to his teenage patient. Turk's narration ends with him mailing the invitations, certain that Carla is the perfect partner for him.

Elliot[]

Meanwhile, Elliot talks to Sean on the phone and complains that he is still in New Zealand and says that she wishes he was back in town with her. On his way to jump his bike across a canyon on a dare from some local children, J.D. runs into Elliot who shares more sadness that her schedule will not allow her to perform as the clown in Sacred Heart's pediatrics ward, despite spending a whole summer at clown academy. J.D. fills in for her to entertain the children, but they mock him and Janitor, also in clown costume piles on the embarrassment.

Elliot then meets her patient Mrs. Bell, a beautiful woman with a portly husband. Elliot complains about her romantic life and Mrs. Bell shares a life lesson that a good man is there for you when you don't ask. Realizing that J.D. is there for her a night of friendship watching TV turns into a hookup. As they share a tender moment after sex, Sean arrives back in town from New Zealand. Elliot abruptly leaves J.D. to be with Sean.

Dr. Miller[]

Kelso invites Dr. Miller to an administrators lunch but Dr. Cox doesn't want her to go, starting yet another war between the two. The stand-off ends in her going to the lunch but not caring about neither Kelso's nor Cox's opinion.

Trivia[]

  • In this episode Elliot reveals that she spent a summer at a clown academy.
  • This is the first "Story" episode that uses the slow-mo echo sound of J.D. transferring his narration through bodily contact, whereas in the rest of the Story episodes a whooshing sound is used.
  • According to the DVD commentary, the clown subplot of this episode was inspired by the fact that one of the show's medical consultants actually once had to give a family bad news while wearing a clown costume.
  • The scene where Turk has a fantasy of Carla trying to pull his invitations into the mailbox is an reference to a scene in Stephen King's horror book and TV miniseries It. The main antagonist in the movie is a clown.
  • The plot of Turk having to deal with a patient being a pianist with nerve damage is similar to an episode of MASH "Morale Victory" where Winchester deals with the same issue with a patient.

Continuity

  • In this episode, Turk claims he has only ever made minor slip-ups before, however in "My First Kill" he claims to have accidentally killed someone during his first year as surgeon.
  • When Carla explains that Turk needs to un-invite "that slut you went out with in high school", Turk explains she's married to his brother. Ten episodes prior in "My Brother, My Keeper" it is revealed that Kevin Turk is recently divorced.
  • J.D. perfectly pronounces Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, something he was previously unable to do in "My Lucky Day".
