Dr. Franklyn was a patient at Sacred Heart Hospital.

Dr. Franklyn and three other doctors, Dr. Douglas, Dr. Bailey, and Dr. Lamar were at a conference together and all contracted Legionnaires' Pneumonia. They all shared a room at Sacred Heart, and J.D. was an intern assigned to them. They frightened him with stories of doctors who had gotten sick because of patients, and had a good laugh when J.D. left frightened. However, when J.D. admitted to Elliot that he was afraid of getting sick from a patient, he lost the respect of Dr. Franklyn.

- Dr. Franklyn makes a comment and his friends groan that he is going to make a "fart joke". This could be a reference to Stephen Furst's most famous role as frat boy Flounder in Animal House.
- Stephen Furst, Ed Begley Jr., Eric Laneuville, and William Daniels were all doctors on the 1980s NBC show St. Elsewhere.
