Alexander was born in New York. Chaplin was accepted to Juilliard in 1989 and appeared in numerous plays for numerous companies. In 1992, Alex appeared in three episodes of ABC Afterschool Specials, and later appeared in the film The Basketball Diaries. Alex was then cast in Bill Lawrence's Spin City where he appeared for 70 episodes.
